Caption: Project:
NYC Wildflower week has a native plant garden in New York’s Union
Square Park. As part of their yearly event they asked me to propose
a public sculpture that could be incorporated into their garden for the
summer. The project was approved, funded, and then denied by the
NY Parks Department due to my having recently completed a public
work in Central Park.
Proposal:
A 35-50 foot coconut palm (exact height TBD) is installed in the middle
of the Native Plant Garden in Union Square. The tree’s height will be
such that it does not interfere with the other trees and calculated to
make the palm as visible as possible. Hung a short ways up the truck,
above head height, is a sign that simply reads “Natives Only”. The sign
will be routed out of wood.
