• Name: untilted (grill)2001, 15' x 15' x 30", Enameled steel, propane gas, and grillable items Grilling is known as a particularly American pastime. Furthermore, it is a pastime predominantly of men. Often, at evening gatherings men can be found gathered around the contemporary hearth roasting the days take. Normally, one man is in charge and the others watch silently critiquing the performers actions. This proposed sculpture is designed to be installed in a public space either indoors or out. It functions as a piece of monumental modernist sculpture and as a grill suitable for cooking your favorite piece of meat. Viewers are invited to bring their own meat, or perhaps the sponsoring venue would provide burgers. The circular nature of the grill allows for multiple men to cook at once. The diameter is large enough that the participants do not have to stand too close to one another, disrupting the independent and solitary nature of grilling, yet small enough that everyone can check out each others meat. The normal passive aggressive atmosphere of grilling is thus brought into the open allowing for new paradigms of masculinity to be created.
